DELVA and Studioninedots are transforming Rotterdam’s Pompenburg from a forgotten area into a vibrant, green spot in the city. Pompenburg becomes the new link in a currently fragmented area between the city centre, the Agniesebuurt and the Oude Noorden with the new ZOHO district.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

With a three-dimensional redesign of the public space, we are turning Pompenburg into a green city hub. At ground level, we will design three new squares, with lots of greenery and different appearances that match the adjacent city districts, from highly urban to small-scale. Hospitality and local entrepreneurs activate these new town squares. The area will have a low-car layout and new walking and cycling paths will connect to the existing networks, creating an attractive place to stay. The striking Luchtsingel will have a permanent place in the plan in a new form, linking the new squares. The green roof of Hofplein Station, known as De Hofbogen, will remain publicly accessible and provide access to a renovated bridge over the railway lines, linking two parts of the city now separated by the railway. The walkway will end with a characteristic head building where local residents and visitors will meet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The new buildings stand on wider building blocks of five to six storeys high, matching the Rotterdam layer and embracing the public space, creating a more intimate public zone at the heart. We use the space on top of the lower blocks to lay out extensive urban gardens. At the core of the wide foundations is room for more anonymous programme elements, which can be hidden behind the wide, lively facades. The tower volumes mark the new Pompenburg in the Rotterdam skyline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
