Valerius - Amsterdam
In the heart of Amsterdam’s Oud-Zuid district lies the stylish Valerius apartment complex, nestled in a new pocket park. The location of the new park, bordered by the Valeriusstraat, Valeriusplein and Lassusstraat, is in the heart of Oud-Zuid – a district in Amsterdam known for its elegant, rather monumental 19th-century architecture. The demolition of the old Valeriuskliniek presented a unique opportunity: combining urban densification with radical greening – creating a pleasant living environment for people and animals.
Valerius – an example of how we beautifully merge the densification of our cities with robust greening.
The building, designed by MVSA, has a contemporary note. The pocket park forms the connector between this new construction and the context with mainly elegant monumental 19th-century architecture. The park nestles on the edge of the Vondelpark. It forms a place of meeting between residents and the neighbourhood. It also cools the city and the abundance of green welcomes a multitude of nesting opportunities for animals.
The biggest compliment is that residents spontaneously gave us a hug out of thanks after hearing that we designed the park.
